Happy Anniversary!

(Just for the record, I wrote this post last week and scheduled it to post automatically today.  I assure you I am out enjoying Paris and I am NOT sitting in front of a computer typing blog post!)

As of today, David and I have been married for 14 years!  It's not a big milestone like the 10th or the 20th.  The traditional gift for the 14th anniversary is ivory.  What in the heck can you give (or get) that is ivory???  Although we are celebrating in Paris, that was in large part coincidence and the number itself just didn't seem like that big of a deal - Until a little conversation I had with another mom.

Last week, while Emily was in dance/gymnastics class, I sat chatting with another mom whose daughter is also in the class.  I mentioned our upcoming trip to Paris and she asked what anniversary we would be celebrating.  "The 14th," I replied, "Not a big milestone or anything."  "Yes it is!" she responded.  "These days, 14 years is a very big deal!"  That really got me thinking because you know what?  She's right!  Over the past 3-4 years, David and I have known or heard of many couples getting divorced.  Most of them were at an age and stage similar to ours.  They seemed happy on the surface, then, suddenly, it was over.

The truth is that marriage is hard.  There are constant small stressors like schedules and intimacy.  There are even more constant big stressors like finances and kids.  And, no two people agree on everything all the time.  Making a marriage work requires much more than just basic compatibility.  It requires dedication, hard work, communication, and compromise.  Looking at it from that perspective, 14 years may not warrant gold or silver, but it is most definitely a significant accomplishment.

I am so incredibly blessed to have a husband who loves me despite my flaws, supports me in everything I do, and works just as hard as I do to make this marriage - and this family - a happy one.

DW,  I love you.  I love what our life has become over the past 14 years.  It has not always been easy, but, to steal a line from one of my favorite movies - you complete me.  I cannot imagine traveling on this road of life without you by my side.  Thank you for 14+ wonderful years and I can't wait to see what the next 14+ have in store for us!!
(I know you don't like this mushy stuff, so don't worry - I promise to get you a funny card!  See - compromise!) ;-)
