Words That Describe Me {#TuesdayTen Linkup}

As you know, Rabia and I like to look at lists of all the obscure holidays people have created when we are coming up with our Tuesday Ten topics. When I saw that today, Sept 9, is Wonderful Weirdos Day, I was immediately reminded of our Bible School curriculum from this summer. The curriculum was entitled "Weird Animals" and when I first saw it along with some other VBS organizers, we were a bit skeptical. After all, it doesn't sound to great to be calling people weird!! We quickly learned, however, that the point of the curriculum was to teach kids that weird means unique and we are all unique, aren't we? So, I thought that for this week's Tuesday Ten, in honor of Wonderful Weirdos Day, we could all list some things that make us unique or some words that describe us.

In general, I don't like to talk about myself. I can talk about my family, my friends, my job, my blog - whatever, but not directly about myself. I'm one of those people who can't seem to accept a compliment and I was pretty uncomfortable coming up with a list of words about myself. I did it, though, and here they are:
  1. Introvert
  2. Organized
  3. Creative (Not in a arts and crafts kind of way. More of an ideas kind of way.)
  4. Smart
  5. Compassionate
  6. Conservative
  7. Dedicated
  8. Indecisive
  9. Self-conscious
  10. Strong
It's not a bad list, but after I made it and perhaps because of #3, I decided it would be fun to see what other people had to say about me. So, I went to Facebook and asked people to comment with one word they thought described me. What an interesting and humbling response I received! I got far more than ten words. Some came from in person friends. Some came from co-workers or friends from high school and college. Still others came from blogger friends - some who I have met in person and some who I have not.

At a time when I could use a little self confidence booster, these dear folks gave me a gigantic one! I list their words here not to be boastful, but to say thanks to them for seeing in me what, sometimes, I cannot.
  • Grounded (From Nana, friend and former co-worker)
  • Caring (From Ashley, a dear friend from church who has recently moved away.)
  • Dedicated (From two friends, one from the neighborhood; the other from church)
  • Responsible (From Wendi,  another dear girlfriend from church)
  • Faithful (Also from Wendi)
  • Sincere (From Tessa and Caroline, two sweet church friends and Bible study pals)
  • Inspiring (From Annette, my freshman year college roommate)
  • Selfless (From Tanya,  a very dear friend)
  • Wonderful (From Kristi, one of my blogging besties)
  • Sweet (From Rabia, my lovely #TuesdayTen co-host)
  • Constant (From Polly, another close church friend)
  • Thoughtful ( From Kathy, a blog friend who is super sweet herself)
  • Organized (From Judy, a wonderful mom friend)
  • Loving (From my loving mother in law)
  • Kind (From Katia, another beautiful friend from the blogosphere)
  • Intelligent (From Paula, a classmate from high school)
  • Can-Doer (From Debbie, another church friend)
  • Capable (From Courtenay, another treasured, long-time church friend)
  • Last, but certainly not least, I got a Hubba-Hubba from my wonderful, supportive husband.
I think that, often, we are reluctant to commend ourselves for fear that we will seem boastful or over-confident. Instead, we deflect the compliments and hone in on the negatives- no matter how big or small they might be. Maybe it's a woman thing?? Maybe it's just a me thing. I can tell you, though, that letting the comments sink in feels good and so very humbling. It also reminds me that I need to add one important word to my list - GRATEFUL. I am grateful for the blessings in my life, including all the friends and family who love me despite my flaws.

This would so be me, because I can never describe myself and love that you took to Facebook to ask others and think from getting to know you that they were spot on :)

Love this! I saw you ask on FB and I absolutely love the responses you got. Such a good idea. So true, the words I use to describe myself probably never match up with how my friends would describe me. Which means it's always good to ask!

Thanks, Janine! I'm not sure what I was expecting others to say, but I was a little overwhelmed by their kind words.

It was truly humbling! Something fun to try on FB someday when you need a little pick-me-up.

This is a beautiful post, Lisa. It's hard for me too to seriously say nice things about myself. I can do it so easily regarding others, but when it comes to doing it for myself, I struggle and feel awkward. I love that you found the courage to do it and even more, I love the feeling you received from doing it. All of those awesome words that your friends used to aptly describe you - how wonderfully uplifting that had to be. Definitely made for an awesome post! :)

I was skeptical of that VBS curriculum too, but it ended up being awesome!!! I also add the exact same caveat every time I describe myself as "creative." I do NOT mean that I'm good at DIY projects, haha!!! But I am quite clever with words and ideas.

Thanks, Rabia!

Thanks, Marcia! Why is it that it is s hard for us to be nice to ourselves? We'll both have to keep working on it! :-)

I am actually terrible at DIY or arts & crafts, os I ALWAYS clarify lest people ask me to help them sew something! :-)

I'm smiling at what your husband said. I meant to comment on that status and I would have said graceful, I think. Poised. Kind.

I think you are all those words and more. I didn't see the Facebook post, but I would have said considerate, and caring. You are a good friend to those who know you. I love your husband's comment...that was very sweet!

You are all that, Lisa! I would add friendly to the list. :)

I feel the same way in that it's difficult for me to accept a compliment. This was a very cool exercise and although I don't know you IRL, I can tell from your writing that you are all those things and more! What a great list and I can see how it would give you a boost in self-confidence and yes, feeling grateful...

You're right. We need to be grateful for people who see the best in us even when we don't see it in ourselves often. Over time, I've learned how to say thank you for the compliments I received and I'm really glad to know that I'm doing something right...and they really motivate me to work harder. So nice that you pointed that out here. :)
