I had just one problem, though. The truth is that I really don't read many novels, so I can't list my 10 favorites. I read plenty of blogs and I read magazines, but rarely anything longer than 2,000 words. You may ask why someone like me who loves words and enjoys writing would not also be an avid reader. Well, the answer is time.
I've never been the kind of person who could sit down with a book and get so engrossed that I can't put it down and, three hours later, it's finished. That's not me. I tend to read in short spurts. I read during carpool line or while I'm waiting for my kids to finish their riding lesson. Sometimes, I read at night after they go to bed, but by then, I'm so exhausted that I'm falling asleep after a chapter or two. So, I average a chapter a day and, instead of hours, it takes me days (even weeks) to get through an entire novel.
For the past few years, I have made a resolution to read more and failed. This year, I made a more specific goal to read 6 books in 2015. I decided that, to further my goal and for today's list, I would go ahead and choose some specific books to put on my list to read. Maybe it will spur me on to be an overachiever and I'll read all 10!!! Who knows? Maybe some of them will become my favorites! Here are 10 books I
- Landline by Rainbow Rowell - I've already read this one! I read it in January and thought it was pretty good. In the book, Georgie & Neal already have a rocky marriage, but when Georgie has to skip out on a trip to visit Neal's family over Christmas due to work it gets even rockier. Then, Georgie calls Neal using the landline at her mom's home and the strangest thing happens!
- Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - I've started this one already and I'm hooked, so don't spoil the ending for me! Nick and Amy have moved form NYC back to Nick's small hometown in Missouri. On their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy disappears. I'm halfway through this one and I cannot wait to finish it and find out what really happened to her!
- Outlander by Dana Gabaldon - I like historical fiction and a handful of friends have told me I should try this series. It was even made into a TV series, so it must be pretty good, right? (When 1945 combat nurse, Claire, touches an ancient boulder, she suddenly becomes and "outlander" in 1743 Scotland.)
- Me Before You by JoJo Moyes- Touted as "a love story for this generation," I have heard nothing but good things about this book.
- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr - Another historical fictions book this one is about "a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II." The summary sounds very intriguing.
- The Light Between the Oceans by M.L. Stedman- This one is also historical fiction and sounds really compelling. Tom, a light house keeper in Australia and his wife, Isabel, have been unable to have a child. When a boat washed up on shore with a baby and a dead man inside, Isabel convinces her husband to keep the child. When they return to the mainland two years later with the child, they learn the consequences of their choice.
- After Birth by Elisa Albert - This book is scheduled to be released on Feb. 15, 2015. A departure from the other fiction on my list and with a focus on the struggles of early motherhood. A year into motherhood, Ari is still trying to get acclimated. When she meets Mina, who is alone and nine months pregnant, the two become friends.
- The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins- Rachel takes the same train every day and see the same couple on her trip. One day, she sees something shocking and cannot keep it to herself. Referred to as a "Hitchcockian thriller," this one promises to be full of suspense!
- Cutting Teeth by Julia Fierro- From Barnes and Noble: "Cutting Teeth takes place one late-summer weekend as a group of thirty-something couples gather at a shabby beach house on Long Island, their young children in tow. . . . . about the complex dilemmas of early midlife—the vicissitudes of friendship, of romantic and familial love, and of sex. It’s about class tension, status hunger, and the unease of being in possession of life's greatest bounty while still wondering, is this as good as it gets?"
- The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd- This one was on Dana's list of her favorite books from 2014. Again, it's historical fiction - the story of two young girls, one a slave given to the other on her 11 birthday. The novel follow their lives and relationship over the next 35 years.
- Paper Towns by John Green - From Barnes and Noble: "When Margo Roth Spiegelman beckons Quentin Jacobsen in the middle of the night—dressed like a ninja and plotting an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows her. Margo’s always planned extravagantly, and, until now, she’s always planned solo. After a lifetime of loving Margo from afar, things are finally looking up for Q . . . until day breaks and she has vanished. Always an enigma, Margo has now become a mystery. But there are clues. And they’re for Q."
- The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton - This one is also from Dana's list. At age 15, Laurel witnesses her mother commit a shocking crime. Fifty years later, her mother is 90 and Laurel is searching for clues and answers before it's too late.

So many great ones on your list. A few I already read like Gone Girl (totally won't spoil it for you), which I absolutely loved because this book's plot had so many twists and turns, but ultimately the ending was very fitting. And by the way, I have a few on my list, too like Landline as I love Rainbow Rowell's writing from reading her previously 😉
Two of my recs on your list - thank you! I hope you like them. I've read five other books on your list of ten, and The Girl on the Train is high on my to-read list.
Happy reading, and let me know what you think of the books on your list!
I've only read two of your choices! The Light Between the Oceans was a great book. I can't believe I forgot that one on my list!
I'm thrilled with this week's theme. I am always on the lookout for good book recommendations.
Oh, Gone Girl! Read it in a padded room. It will make you mad enough to throw it against the wall! That's the only one on your list that I've read. I'll have to look into the others.
I've read Landline...and I love Rainbow Rowell's books!!! Gone Girl was one I didn't really get into, but I'm hoping the movie will be better. The entire Outlander series is FABULOUS!
I loved Gone Girl right up until the end. And I have heard great things about The Light Between The Oceans but haven't read it yet. I jotted down a few of these to look for next time I head to the book store. Thanks for sharing!
Since I 'm just getting back into reading, I wasn't thrilled with Landline. (I haven't read her other stuff, so can't compare.) I found that I really did want to know how it would end, but I wasn't as drawn in as all the reviews said I would be. Personally, I found the ending to be a bit of a letdown. But, it was still a good, easy read. I'm about 3/4 through Gone Girl and it is so great!
Thanks Dana! I really did take your advice to heart about what to read and consulted your lists. I am loving Gone Girl and I think I'll read The Light Between The Oceans next. Have you read that one?
This week's theme definitely seems to be a hit! I think I am going to read The Light Between the Oceans next. Glad to know you liked it!
I'm about 3/4 of the way through it. I wish I had a padded room so I could lock everyone out and just finish the darn thing already! Can't wait to see how it ends!
I thought Landline was just ok, but I haven't read anything else by her. I am loving Gone Girl. I am intimidated by the Outlander series (I don't know why), but several people have recommended it to me.
I did - it was good!
The Light between the Oceans is the next one I want to read. I have enjoyed everyone's lists today and I think we will all be making some trips to the library and/or bookstore soon!
I read The Secret Keeper, based on Dana! I also read The Light Between Oceans, Me Before You, and Gone Girl. Boy, no light reads there!
Please tweet me when you finish Gone Girl. I want to know your reaction ;-) I've heard of some of the others on your list but haven't read them. I rushed to read Gone Girl when I knew it was coming to the theaters.
Nope, not light, but hopefully good???? Gone Girl has totally sucked me in. Maybe the rest will too!
I am so close to the end and a couple people have said something similar. I cannot wait to figure out the conclusion! I will tweet you!
I want to read "Wild"... and i Am Malala". I will pin your list for later this year!! Let us know how they are as you go, okay?
I loved Cutting Teeth and The Invention of Wings! I need to read Afterbirth- it sounds great!
Sure! I have read Landline and Gone Girl. Landline was ok. gone Girl was awesome but the ending sucked. I'm reading Light Between Oceans now.
I got a notification that After Birth is now officially out. I can't wait to read it and Cutting Teeth sounds like a good one.
